Our curriculum is committed to community service and empowerment and social justice. Students are encouraged to connect their classroom education to internship opportunities at legal services agencies, bilingual newspapers, health clinics, art galleries and more! Students become equipped with a unique body of knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in their own lives, for Latina/o/x communities and society at large. Our graduates are socially conscious, critically astute and community-minded; they have the skills to create positive change wherever they go.
LTNS Students Advocate for Social Change in Diverse Careers

The Latina/Latino Studies program expanded my knowledge of not only the struggles but also the achievements of my community throughout history. Learning more about the systems that create health, social and educational disparities motivated me to continue my path to medicine. The program offers many opportunities to be involved in community projects to not only make an impact but also be able to use these experiences to reach your educational and academic goals. Today, as a physician, I feel that the Latina/Latino Studies program at SF State has helped me understand how to use medicine not only to heal through a more humanistic lens but also how to use medicine as a tool for social change.

LTNS Courses Teach Empowerment and Social Justice
LTNS 230 Intro to Latinx Literature
Taught by award-winning Nicaraguan poet Daisy Zamora. By reflecting on the concerns of Latinx writers, we will come to an understanding of the writers’ culture, history and also ourselves.
LTNS 278 History of Latinos in the U.S.
U.S. history with a focus on Latinx social movements, political power, work & class, gender & sexuality and (im)migration patterns of various national origin groups.
LTNS 455 Resistance Literature of the Americas
What motivates Latinx and Latin American writers to use their craft as a tool for social change? Find out in this class taught by poet Leticia Hernandez.
LTNS 467 Caribbeans in the U.S.
Join Professor Bárbara Abadía-Rexach in surveying the history of Caribbean migration to the U.S. since the 19th century by focusing on Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
